The Science Behind Medical Marijuana: How does CBD work with the endocannabinoid system?

on November 12, 2021

No matter if you’re new to medical marijuana or have been medicating for a while, you might be curious about the science behind how it works with your body and gives you all those healthy benefits.

Here at Hive, we love to geek out about how both CBD and THC work with your brain and body to relieve the symptoms you’ve been suffering with.

In this post, you’ll learn:

  • What is CBD?
  • How does CBD work with your body?
  • What’s the science behind endocannabinoids?

What is CBD?

While THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is known for giving a more energizing, head buzz feeling, Cannabidiol (CBD) is the non-psychotic cannabinoid that’s known for helping treat seizures and anxiety, among many other symptoms.

How does CBD work with your body?

Cannabinoids like CBD work by binding with the endocannabinoid system in the human body. Our endocannabinoid system has special receptors that cannabinoids can bond to and mimic our own endocannabinoids.

In the case of CBD, that means more relief from anxiety and depression symptoms, a better ability to sleep, pain relief, and much more.

What’s the science behind endocannabinoids?

As we’ve explained, the cannabinoids from CBD react to the endocannabinoid system in your body. And they do much more than react, cannabinoids actually bind inside of our cells. Through a molecular reaction, cannabinoids bind to nuclear receptors in our bodies.

In humans, the endocannabinoid system acts as a biochemical control system and regulates processes for us, including things like pain, mood, and stress. Since CBD interacts with those processes, it has the innate ability to trigger a change and alternate what these cells are signaling.

Endocannabinoid receptors are located all throughout the body, including: the hippocampus, cerebellum, cerebral cortex, amygdala, and more. These areas are responsible for controlling memory, learning, coordination, decision making, emotions, and many other complex human functions.

As you can see, there’s a lot of science behind the CBD that you take for your medical condition. Learning about how medical cannabis works in the body is just one more way you can better leverage it for your health and wellness.
