Bong 101: What Are the Different Types of Bongs, How Are Glass Bongs Made & How Do They Work?

on May 25, 2021

Whether you’re a new bong user or a seasoned pro, understanding how bongs are made, how they work, and the different types available will help your cannabis experience.

Let’s get right to it: Bong 101.

What are the different types of bongs?

As with all things medical cannabis, there’s a little something for everyone when it comes to bongs. While bongs can be made out of (practically) anything, here are the materials most often used:

  • Glass
  • Silicone
  • Ceramic
  • Acrylic
  • Metal

The highest recommended (and the most popular) are the first three: glass, silicone, and ceramic. These tend to be the easiest to clean, most durable, and affordable.

Aside from material, bongs also come in plenty of shapes, sizes, and styles. Here are some of the most popular styles:

  • Beaker bongs
  • Bubble or round base bongs
  • Homemade bongs
  • Multi-chamber bongs
  • Percolator bong
  • Recycler bong
  • Straight tube bongs
  • Zig zag bongs

How is a glass bong made?

One of the most popular types of bongs – glass bongs – are handmade through a glassblowing process. Since they are made this way, each glass bong is extremely similar, but unique.

How does a bong work?

Bongs work by allowing medical marijuana users to more efficiently enjoy smoking than a traditional joint.

To start, the bowl (or slide) is packed with your dry herbs; then inhale through the mouthpiece as you ignite the cannabis. The flame will heat the combustible material in the marijuana and create smoke.

The bong will diffuse the hot air through the downstem or percolator and into water. This process cools the smoke and gives you a cooler, smoother hit.
